What does your family do on Christmas?
Do you hide a pickle ornament on the Christmas Tree?
O.K., stop laughing, this is a real Christmas tradition. The first person to find the pickle on Christmas morning can open the first present, or they get an additional gift.
How about putting a piece of fruitcake under your pillow to give you good dreams?
Or, telling ghost stories? I wondered about this one with the line in the Christmas song, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The line goes, “…there’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmas’s long, long ago.” Scary ghost stories? That was never part of our family tradition, but a long time ago in England it was a part of their traditions. The Victorians loved a good ghost story and that is why Dicken’s wrote, “A Christmas Carol.”
Our family traditions have changed over the years and we have even invented one. We celebrate Christmas Adam. One of my sons is named Adam and wondered why Eve got all the attention. Get it, Christmas Eve. Adam came before Eve so our family celebrates Christmas Adam on December 23rd by going out to dinner together and spending time catching up.
It doesn’t matter what your traditions are – just that you have some. Traditions help to cement us together as families. Make some up, change what isn’t working for something that does work.
Whatever and however you decide to celebrate Christmas or the end of the year, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas.
