Watch Your Language

The language that we choose makes a big difference, and can completely change our experience. I got two great examples last night as I was reading John Maxwell’s Failing Forward. Do your challenges in life make you bitter or better? Does adversity lead to breakdowns or breakthroughs? Then this morning with one of my clients we were discussing letting go. Letting go is different from giving up. If what you want is not yet in your hand, and your hand is clenched so tightly around what you already have, how can you receive what you want? Weeds Thrive Too

After a very rainy May here in Utah, my little garden is thriving and growing well. I also have a weed patch in a neglected spot that is thriving and growing well. Our minds are like the fertile earth, ready and willing to return an abundance of whatever we plant and cultivate there. But be careful – weeds are default. If you don’t intentionally plant productive and positive thoughts, you may soon find the place overgrown with weeds of negativity, fear, and doubt. Every thought is a seed. If you plant crab apples, don’t count on harvesting golden delicious. – Bill Meyer

Stratospheric Success

I read a compelling book this week by Bob Burg and John David Mann called, “The Go-Giver”. These authors understand one of the best kept secrets of success, that human life income actually flows outward from you. I especially liked their five laws of stratospheric success which are: The Law of Value bad credit military loans Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment The Law of Compensation Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them The Law of Influence Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first. Yesterday’s Tomorrow

As I was meeting with a client this week she shared today’s quote with me: “Today is the tomorrow that you were afraid of yesterday.” Here it is, and there you are still handling everything as it comes. At the root of every fear is the same belief – that I can’t handle it. Nothing could be farther from the truth – you have already handled absolutely everything so far, and that will not be changing. Just Do It

Your mind has the amazing capability to create solutions and opportunities, and at the same time has the equally impressive ability to identify all of the reasons why you can’t do something. You are naturally endowed with the ability to know what to do in certain moments. You will know, for example, that someone could use a call or a smile or a kind word. Your amazing mind then gives you a dozen reasons to not do what you felt and knew to do. Follow your first impressions, your natural knowing, and watch miracles start to happen in your life and the lives of those around you. Follow The Lights

Have you ever been out driving in the fog or the rain or snow, and it gets so heavy that you can barely see where you are going? I remember several times like this when the best way to keep moving forward is to follow the lights of someone ahead. Life gets murky at times and it can be hard to see clearly the road ahead. Find wise mentors and be humble enough to look at their experience. Keep moving forward, you never know who is following your lights. Everything That Doesn’t Look Like That

I snapped this picture this morning of a stick that I keep on my desk. When I show this to people they are sometimes amazed that a stick could be carved to look like a chain or a cage with two freely moving balls inside. They sometimes ask, “how did you do that?” My favorite answer, “I just cut off everything that doesn’t look like that.” What a great analogy for life. Revealing Riches

A new client and friend, Chad, said to me this week that his mission in life is to help those who are leading quiet lives of desperation. Another new friend, Brad Barton, quotes Benjamin Disraeli in his book Beyond Illusions as saying, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches, but to reveal to him his own.” There are people in YOUR world today who don’t understand their own worth and what they have to offer – speak truth to them!

The Middle Part

Often when we are right in the middle of a difficult situation, it is tempting to look at our results as a disaster. “I’ve failed!” we might lament, feeling completely certain that life’s test has defeated us. A few days ago I was meeting with a client who expressed something like this and his embarrassment at being in the kind of situation that he was. I responded to him that from my perspective he was describing not a failure, but the MIDDLE part of a very inspiring story. Think about how some of the stories that inspire you the most have some very difficult stuff in the MIDDLE. Everything is OK in the end – if it is not OK, it is not the end! Keep working on your story – you’re not done yet.

The Gold Focus

Greetings Friends! I’ve noticed a tendency for people to notice their weaknesses, be troubled by them, and focus on them sometimes without giving much credit to their strengths. But it is your strengths that give you the most power in accomplishing your dreams. I like the way John C. Maxwell put it in his book, Talent Is Never Enough. He said, “Focusing on weaknesses instead of strengths is like having a handful of coins – a few made of pure gold and the rest of tarnished copper – and setting aside the gold coins to spend all your time cleaning and shining the copper ones in the hopes of making them look more valuable. No matter how long you spend on them, they will never be worth what the gold ones are. Go with your greatest assets; don’t waste your time.” Bring out your gold!
