Good Morning Friends! Last week when I sent a message about facing our giants, I got more responses than normal. It seems that everyone has current giants. Our desire for security sometimes gets us stuck on this side of our giants. I really like what Helen Keller had to say about security – and for those of you who may have forgotten, Helen Keller was both blind and deaf… “Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature nor do the children of man as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” – Helen Keller

This is great insight! The discussion about security is especially poignant to me as I’m starting my new job. It’s a small company that’s just barely starting to earn revenue. I had more than one person at my last job tell me it was foolish for leaving a “secure” job for a startup company. So many people have been burned that the consensus is going to a startup is temporary and “you will soon be back knocking at our door.”
My view polar opposite. Security for me is having opportunities to learn new things and to really make a difference with the work I perform. If I’d have stayed in the “secure” job it would have been much more risky. The company I’m working with may not be around forever, maybe not even a year. However, the relationships I develop (w/ executives, venture capitalists, etc.) will be invaluable to me as I move forward. Thanks for reminding me!
